Welcome to The Cakery On First

It’s so nice to meet you…

Hello, my name is Abby. I am the baker behind The Cakery on First. A fourth generation Sandpoint native, I’ve worked as a commercial food stylist in San Francisco for the past 14 years. Like so many, a small hometown bakery has always been a dream so when the world shut down in 2020, like many of you, I took a big leap.

The Cakery on First was originally intended to operate as an Idaho Cottage Food business, meaning I would be baking and selling simply out of my home. When I began working with the local health department I learned that without a commercial kitchen most of the recipes that make for a dreamy, memorable cake would be off the table. No custards, no creams, no curds. Certainly no cream cheese. Even the butter for my buttercream was in question. It seemed the only alternative to cutting the menu (and all the joy) was to build a kitchen. And so in October of 2020 I started chipping away at constructing a space that would allow The Cakery’s menu complete freedom.

It took three years to bring the kitchen to life. In between wrangling contractors I tested countless recipes and traversed the country to attend as many cake decorating classes as I could afford from some of the most prolific cake designers. I also fed more practice cakes to the nurses at Bonner General Hospital than I can count. They really do have hearts for service.

I am immensely proud of The Cakery on First. It has been a labor of love with so many helping hands to thank along the way. It’s so very good to be home. Thank you, from my whole heart, for supporting this small business. I can’t wait to bake something beautiful for you. 

About The Cakery

The Cakery on First is a microbakery (meaning we’re really small and we make things in small batches) located in Sandpoint. We operate out of our own fully licensed commercial kitchen on First Avenue (no storefront yet) and sell our baked goods online and at the local farmers market. Cake in all its forms is our specialty.

The all-purpose and gluten-free flours we bake with as well as the fruits, vegetables, and nuts in our items are always organic. For all other ingredients, we use organic as often as possible. Our eggs are always free-range and certified humane.
